A low cost fusion reactor. All of the stars are fusion reactors. The fact that so many managed to get turned on has to be a very simple process. A proposal is available to test a new way to achieve fusion at a cost of around 1 million dollars and a useable reactor for around 10 million. If successful, these reactors will be able to replace existing fission reactor and boilers in steam generating stations eliminating the need to buy fuels since the facilities will be able to make hydrogen needed to fuel the reactors. The conditions required to get this research proposals under way is for the United Nations and all the super powers to declare a state of climate emergency.
Here is a contrarian view about the enormous hurdles that the ITER project is facing. https://dennisriches.wordpress.com/2021/07/06/the-experimental-iter-nuclear-fusion-reactor-a-titanic-and-energy-intensive-project/
